His shirt is unbuttoned but still on. I guess I distracted him while he was undressing. He takes it off, followed by his undershirt. He slows down, watching me watch him while he unbuckles his belt and unzips his pants, pushing them down to reveal black boxer briefs holding his erection tightly against his body. Those are discarded, and he's standing naked before me for the first time.

I start to move so that I can come closer to him, but he shakes his head. "No, Amy. I want to take this slow. If you touch me now I won't be able to. Lie back, please."

His words are polite, but there's an edge of command to them. If hard and fast was as good as it was, then slow will likely be even better, so I comply. He stretches out beside me, his hand traveling over the bare skin of my belly, raising goosebumps in its wake. He smiles, watching my body shiver in response to his touch. Then he leans over, kissing my skin, trailing his tongue up until he reaches the lower band of my bra. He tugs the cups down out of his way, running his hand over my breasts, squeezing and tugging at each nipple in turn, before taking one into his mouth.

After worshipping my left breast, he moves over me so he can reach the other one. His hands come behind me and I arch my back so he can reach the hooks of my bra. After tossing it off behind me somewhere, he settles his weight between my thighs. Only the thin fabric of my black lace thong is between us. I rock my hips, grinding my pussy against his cock where it rests against me.

He groans into my breast, then releases my nipple with an audible pop. He looks me in the eye, one hand moving to hold my hips still. "Not yet, Amy. Soon." With that he returns his attentions to my breasts, but doesn't stay much longer.

He crawls his way down my body, trailing kisses. He sits back on his knees, his cock sticking out, his hands at my hips. He tugs my panties down and off, then resettles on his knees between my thighs, his hands stroking me lightly over my belly, my hips, my thighs, and finally back to my pussy.

He's watching his movements as though mesmerized by the sight of his hands on me. He doesn't say anything, just slides down onto his belly until his face is level with my pussy, his hands pushing my legs further apart so he has better access. He spreads me open with his thumbs before setting to work with his mouth.

I'm so aroused already from his attentions that it doesn't take long until I'm at the edge, squirming and bucking under his talented tongue. One hand is holding me in place, and the other spears two fingers inside me. He sucks my clit into his mouth and when he crooks his fingers and presses on that spot inside me, I explode.

He doesn't release the pressure until I've started coming down, and then he backs off my clit for a moment, but keeps his fingers pumping in and out of me. I'm spiraling upward again in what feels like no time at all, and his tongue is drawing circles around my clit again and again, never directly touching it. When he does finally make direct contact, he flicks it lightly, then sucks it in again. The combination of the suction, the feel of his tongue, and his fingers still inside me sends me over the edge again, white lights dancing behind my eyelids from the force of my second orgasm.

My scream is cut off by his mouth. He slides inside in one thrust and holds himself there for a moment, though whether that's for his benefit or mine, I'm not sure.

He starts to move slowly, and the feel of him inside me is exquisite. I sigh with pleasure, and he pulls back and smiles at me. "I'm not going to last long."

It's my turn to smile. "That's okay. You don't need to."

With that he picks up his pace, thrusting hard with each stroke. He's right. Soon he thrusts into me hard again, and once more, holding still, his eyes tightly shut, while the muscles in his arms and shoulders tremble around me. He drops his head to my shoulder for a moment before kissing me once more. He rolls to the side, pulling me with him, our lower halves still pressed together.

He kisses me again. "I want to stay inside you all night, but I should probably deal with the condom."

I chuckle, pressing a quick kiss to his mouth. "Yes, you probably should."

He narrows his eyes at me. "You better still be here when I get back."

I hold up a hand. "I swear. I'm not going anywhere."

He plants another kiss on my mouth before pulling away, watching me as he walks to the bathroom.

I giggle. "We're in my room, Adam. Where would I go?"

He pops his head back out of the bathroom door. "If that was supposed to be reassuring, it wasn't." He disappears back inside the bathroom, and I hear him turn on the shower. He comes back out. "Let me show you what I had planned for last night if you hadn't bolted."

He leads me into the bathroom and into the shower.

While he didn't spend all night inside me, it wasn't for lack of trying.

  EPILOGUE

  "Ew! Get a room!"

I pull back from kissing Adam across the bar at The Barrel Room to look at Jenna, who is standing behind the bar with Brian's arms around her. "You've been married a month and you're already a crotchety old married couple who can't stand PDA?"

Brian shoots me a cheeky grin, then dips Jenna and proceeds to show us what PDA really looks like. When he stands her back up, Jenna's face is flushed, her lips pink and swollen. She fans herself with one hand. "Whew!" She looks at me. "That's PDA."

Adam laughs before leaning across the bar and giving me another kiss, though nothing like the one Brian just gave Jenna. "Let me grab my keys from the office and then we can go."

I wave goodbye to Jenna, who's settling in on her favorite bar stool while Brian works, and Adam and I leave hand in hand. "Did you finish everything you needed to do?"

Adam nods, then leans over to place a kiss on my lips. He slows our progress to his car to a halt, deepening the kiss, one of his hands reaching up to cup my cheek. A group of people jostling us as they pass causes him to break off the kiss, bringing my attention to the fact that we're standing in the middle of a busy sidewalk at the height of tourist season.

He looks down at me, his thumb caressing my cheek. "Do we really have to go shopping now?"

I look up at him through my lashes, biting my lower lip. He licks his own lower lip in response. "Did you have something else in mind?"

He pulls me closer with the hand around my waist. He dips his head to speak into my ear. "Oh, I'm sure I can come up with something." His voice is low and full of suggestion. I can feel the rumble in his chest where I'm pressed against him. Then his teeth gently bite down on the upper curve of my ear.

I suck in a breath, and he releases my ear, but doesn't loosen his hold on my waist. I can't help but laugh at the hopeful expression on his face. "You know I need to buy Jenna a birthday present."

He sighs and steps back, taking my hand in his once more. "Okay, fine."

We've both been really busy lately and this is the first opportunity we've had to spend time together in almost a week. I've had a summer class for some continuing education credits to renew my certificate that has been more intense than I expected. Adam's been just as busy with The Barrel Room. They're expanding their menu even more, and talking about adding a full kitchen. The space next to theirs is going to be available soon, so they'd be able to add more space for that if they can get the financing and other details worked out. He and Brian have been in meetings to get everything worked out for the better part of the last two weeks. I can't blame him for not wanting to come shopping with me, but Jenna's birthday is in a few days, and I can't put off getting her present any longer.

I climb into the passenger seat of his car while he holds my door open for me. Instead of closing it, he bends down so his face is level with mine. "You'll just have to make it up to me later." His eyes are dancing with humor, but it doesn't mask the desire lurking there as well.

"Of course." I lean forward and kiss him, running my tongue over his lips. He groans, but pulls away and closes the door before either of us can do anything further.

He slides into the driver's seat. "I'm holding you to that."

  * * *

Three hours later Adam and I are back at my house, Jenna's present selected and take-out in hand for dinner.

I put Jenna's present—a set of prints from a local fine art photographer that I know she loves—in the closet to stash it out of the way in case she makes an unexpected visit before I get it wrapped. Adam sets the take-out on the coffee table, before heading to the kitchen for napkins and drinks.

I plop down on the couch and lean back, arm across my eyes. "I'm exhausted."

The couch shifts as Adam sits down, rustling bags and boxes indicating that he's laying out our food. "Well, eat up and regain your strength. You bribed me with promises of sex to go shopping with you, and I intend to collect."

I let my arm fall away from my face so I can look at him. He's still facing the table, eyes on what he's doing, but I can see his lips twitching from the profile view I have. "And here I thought you were coming with me because you love me."

He turns his full attention on me, his face serious. "Well, there's that, too."

  My eyes widen. "What?"

  "I love you, Amy."

I think I stop breathing for a second. He's never said that before. His eyes are examining mine, waiting for my response. "I love you, too." It comes out in a whisper.

Adam leans over me and kisses me deeply. When he pulls back his lips are curved in a smile. "Still, you did make promises. And I'm going to hold you to them. The fact that I would've gone with you without promises of sex is immaterial."

"Don't worry. The sex was on the evening's agenda anyway." I sit forward, bumping his arm with my shoulder. He grins at me, his eyes hooded and full of desire.

He scoops a bit of ravioli onto a fork and feeds it to me, then hands me the fork. "Well, then. Eat up. You'll need your strength for the rest of the night."

I shiver with anticipation, a frisson of arousal skating down my spine to pool between my legs. I almost want to skip dinner, and get straight to fulfilling my earlier promises. But with Adam, a pre-sex meal is as much foreplay as sustenance.

After a few more bites, he offers me a bite of his steak. I open my mouth to accept it, but he swipes it across my lower lip before placing it in my mouth. Once I've swallowed he leans in and licks the remaining sauce from my lip, tugging my lower lip between his teeth, then sucking gently.

We continue our meal, trading kisses and caresses, sharing bites, and licking bits of sauce off each other's bodies. Spilling drips on each other as an excuse to remove clothing. When the food is gone, I'm down to my bra and panties and Adam's in his boxer briefs. I feel as though I could explode with just one touch.

I reach for Adam at the same time he reaches for me. The taste of the wine sauce from his steak lingers on his lips and tongue. He's continuing his slow seduction of my body, and I whimper in frustration, since I don't need any more foreplay at this point. "Adam. I need you inside me. Now."

He groans before taking my mouth in a searing kiss again, his hand dropping to cup my mound over my thong, then tug the fabric out of the way to slide his fingers inside me. "Christ, you're soaked."

  "Please, Adam."

He pulls back to shuck off his boxer briefs and don a condom, before pulling my thong down my legs and tossing it to the side. He sits down and pulls me onto his lap, turning me so I'm straddling him, holding himself steady so I can impale myself. I lower myself down, enjoying the feel of him filling me up and his indrawn breath as he feels me surround him.

Our coupling is quick and frenzied, neither of us taking long to reach a shuddering climax after thirty minutes of foreplay over dinner.

Later that night, I find myself lying awake, the sound of Adam's deep breathing behind me, his arm heavy across my torso, holding my body against his. We fulfilled all of our promises from earlier, and even did a few things that weren't promised.

I'm still reeling somewhat from our mutual declaration of love. It's amazing to me that this man is here now, in my bed. After all our time apart filled with misunderstandings, missed timing, and jealousy, we've managed to put it all aside and be together. And he loves me.

Contentment settles over me like a blanket. Now, all I feel is happiness for my friends in love, no edge of envy tainting it. No fear that I will never have my own happily ever after.

My happily ever after is lying behind me.

  Excerpt:

"I've decided what your next step should be," Amy says after the first movie is over. We've eaten half the pizza, and each plowed through half of our respective pints.

I groan, both from feeling overfull and with dread from hearing her decision for my life. "I'm stuffed," I say, putting the lid back on my ice cream and getting up to put it in the freezer. "Do you want another Mike's?"

"Sure. Aren't you going to ask what I've decided?"

"No. I don't want to know."

"Yes, you do. It's brilliant, I promise."

"What happened to sympathetic Amy that I talked to on the phone earlier? Can I have her back?"

She grins. "Nope. It's proactive Amy's turn. Ask me what you should do next."

I take a deep breath and brace myself. "Fine. What have you decided I should do next with my life?"

  "You need a rebound."

  "What?"

"A rebound. You know, to bounce back."

He let out a surprised shout. He had grabbed her upper arms to steady her when she ran into him, but had pushed her away when he felt the liquid soaking his shirt.

"Oh my God, I'm so sorry." Abby covered her mouth with her hand, feeling like a complete moron. He stood there with his arms out looking down at the mess on his shirt. Then he looked at the matching stain on her shirt and his lips twitched like he might be suppressing a smile.

He cleared his throat. "It's okay." There was laughter in his voice.

Abby crinkled her brows in confusion. Why is he laughing at me? I just spilled my drink all over him. The
n she noticed that his eyes were glued to her chest, and she looked down.
